The Beijing Olympics Are Open

 The Olympics in Beijing are underway and my new flat screen TV is coming to great use. As a matter of fact, I seldom watch TV, but I definitely watch the Olympics. Why? In this and upcoming (if I find the time) Olympic blog posts it will probably become abundantly clear why.

I just saw the opening ceremony – – a phenomenal display of rhythm, light, music, technology, and most of all people. To, for example, see 2,008 Tai Chi masters in perfect harmony and precision form circles and lines out of nowhere, was nothing but astounding. Then we had the parade of nations – a one-of-a kind geography lesson for us all. The Chinese team ended the parade lead by 7 feet 6 inch basketball star and homeland hero Yao Ming, together with another hero - 9-year-old Lin Hao. Lin Hao is now known as the Sichuan earthquake survivor who after having saved himself went back and saved two of his classmates. It was a touching moment, perfectly illustrating the essence of the Olympic spirit. All in all, the host nation put on a marvelous welcome from both performers and spectators. The Olympics have so far given the Chinese people a wonderful opportunity to embrace, and be embraced by, the world. I look forward to what is to come.
